Doug Young is a local boy, born and raised in Austin, with a long career in the restaurant scene starting at age 15 as a dish washer at the Lone Star Café.
From there, Doug worked his way around town at other spots like Captain Boomer’s, Chili’s and Tumbleweed. In 1989, at 19, he began a long stint at Z-Tejas working just about every position from pantry to bartender and eventually General Manager and Operating Partner in 1997. It was at Z-Tejas where Doug met Matt Dodson in 1989 and both discovered they wanted to own and run their own restaurant someday. In 2007 they decided that it was time to branch out on their own, and the search for a concept began. Doug and Matt along with Partners Larry Foles and Guy Villavaso travelled extensively across the country searching for their ideal sports bar. They saw a lot of great sports bars, but any that said to them “This is the one.” Through trial and error they developed a menu with simple but quality driven menu items. Keeping it simple and doing it better is a core ideal they hold to this day.
“We both really like sports but we wanted a place with good food, too. It was important to us that the menu didn’t include a bunch of food that came off the back of a Sysco truck! We also wanted to create a place that provided guests and staff a sense of family.” Young explained. But, another item was high on the list of “must haves” for Cover 3. “Matt and I are both a little country so we like a cold beer. That’s why ice-cold taps are very important. There’s nothing better than a cold beer when you want one.” Young said.
Doug is a graduate of Westwood High School and has a Bachelors of Finance from Texas State University in San Marcos. He is married to Katie Young and has two great kids, Riley and Jack. Doug’s favorite item on the menu is named for him: Doug’s Certified Ruben which is a tasty combination of corned beef, aged Swiss cheese, spicy Russian dressing and kraut on a toasted marbled rye.
Since opening the original location on Anderson Lane in Austin Texas, Doug and Matt have opened two additional restaurants under the “Cover” concept. The more casual and neighborhood sports bar Cover 2 and an additional Cover 3 location on the northwest side of San Antonio.
